Why Is Your Story Important?

Everyone has a story to tell
I believe this with all my heart. Every person has lived a life with unique experiences. No other person on this planet has experienced the same exact thing as you, or made the same choices in life that you have.

Why the story is important
In my personal life I have experienced first hand the loss of stories from important people in my life, and others. Many of my family members have passed away in their early sixties. I was only a small child when my father’s parents passed away, leaving my father and I with a lot of unanswered questions. What was their family like? What was it like growing up in one of the fastest growing Irish immigrant communities in the US? How did they meet? Where did their parents come from?

All of these questions, as well as the everyday memories of daily life have been lost. I have been doing a genealogy search for years to answer some….and I have been successful in finding answers. But, there is a personal feel that is missing from the answers I find. There is no part of my grandparents personalities in those papers I have stored. I don’t know the stories behind the large stack of photos that I inherited. Why is my grandmother laughing so hard in this photo? Or who is that gentleman next to my grandfather in the photo from his job as a young man? How did it make my grandfather feel to grow up without a mother? What were their first struggles as a married couple?

I have also seen this loss of the past in many other families while working as a nursing assistant. Dementia and Alzhiemer’s are horrific diseases that rob people of their very personalities. They do not remember their family members, or their lives. I have seen families struggle to explain to young children why they have to remind Grandpa every week who they are. It is a sad reminder that life is too short.

I do not tell you these things to make you sad, but rather to excite you. Excite you to tell your story! You are important to those around you. You matter, and so does your story. White Lily Studios can help you do just that. In a memory album you can tell parts of your story, or your whole story. Tell of your favorite times with your children, your first job, your first home.
